Mending emotional memories through restorative design in a curation of transformed broken objects

Repair+ is a meaningful initiative that examines the stories and emotions entwined with broken objects. By approaching repair as a transformative act rather than a simple restoration to its original state, the project offers a fresh perspective on healing.
As one of eight designers invited to take part, we were entrusted with repairing a pair of wedding shoes. In collaboration with its owner, Jess, we explored the memories connected to the item and reimagined the creative possibilities of restoration.
During the conversation, Jess fondly recalled her wedding day: the simple beaded tiara she paired with her rented gown, which she had wished to keep; the silver-flowered wedding invitations she purchased from Tecman; the numerous photo albums she carefully preserved; and her fondness for frosted plastic and silver. The heels, a cherished symbol of her journey so far, now bear the marks of time, with yellowing plastic straps, flaking leather soles, and missing heel tips. The aim was to retain as much of their original form and function as possible while infusing them with a sense of renewal.
Restoring Jess’ wedding shoes required extensive research and experimentation to find the ideal plastic for the straps. Enlisting our friend Tze Ling’s skills, the worn leather and yellowed straps were replaced, while Ella’s jewellery expertise guided the addition of beading in a process that felt organic and reflective of Jess’ journey. Inspired by her beaded tiara, materials like white amethyst flower beads, natural shell beads, Czech beads, and Toho seed beads were chosen for their elegance, symbolism, and brilliance.
On the silver insoles where the brand was originally printed, a meaningful imprint was added instead. Tulips were engraved—a nod to their Roman symbolism of fidelity, renewal, and new beginnings. Blooming in spring, they represent Jess’ resilience and the milestones she treasures.
To encapsulate the heels and amplify their importance, it was encased in a larger-than-usual transparent acrylic box, making them a centrepiece of reflection and inspiration. Symbolically, the spacious, transparent case represents the boundless potential and room to grow, to dream, and to embark on new adventures. The laser-engraved message, “Walk with love, always,” serves as a lasting reminder to Jess that every step taken with love lead to meaningful journeys.
"What you have done speaks to my heart. I like the "Walk with love, always" very much. The heels are so clean; so brand new. The colour combinations are beautiful, they are my colour tone, and I like the beads. I want to wear them already!"
Repair+ was showcased at Singapore Design Week 2024, commissioned by the DesignSingapore Council and curated by Hans Tan, a Singapore-based designer, educator, and three-time recipient of the President's Design Award. The exhibition space was designed by Studio Juju.
